Just nine runners have been confirmed for this weekend’s Group 3 Thoroughbred Club Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield Racecourse, highlighted by the inclusion of several notable black type competitors through the 2014 racing calendar so far.
Unable to break through for another race win following an impressive autumn preparation, trainer John O’Shea has confirmed Earthquake in the final field for the 2014 Thoroughbred Club Stakes.
Immediately stamping her claims as one to watch when jogging home to win the Colin Pearce 100th Birthday Plate (1000m) on debut in November last year, Earthquake returned to the track in slick form in autumn; winning the Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude F (1100m) with ease first-up before overcoming the wide and awkward barrier 15 to post a maiden victory at the highest level of Australian racing in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) on February 22nd.
Continuing her perfect run of form through the Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m) on March 22nd, the Exceed And Excel filly was unable to completely account for the rain-soaked Rosehill surface on April 5th, slumping to her first competitive defeat at the hands of Mossfun in the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m).
Finishing third in each of the Group 2 Furious Stakes (1200m) and Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes (1400m) so far this season, O’Shea is confident the step back in distance and class is precisely what is needed for Earthquake to return to the winner’s circle this weekend.
A leading chance of success for the in-form Team Hawkes stable, London Lolly has been confirmed to be partnered by veteran jockey Dwayne Dunn in the 2014 Thoroughbred Club Stakes and is offered a prime racing line from the ideal barrier 2.
Claiming two wins and one minor places from her six competitive starts so far, London Lolly steadily built to the task over her maiden prep through autumn; finishing fourth in the Listed Blue Diamond Preview (1000m) on debut and second in the Quest Moonee Valley Maiden (1000m) on February 14th before breaking through for a maiden race win when beating a talented field to the line in the Listed St Albans Stakes (1200m) on March 29th; returning to the paddock after securing another win in the Group 3 Breeders’ Stakes (1200m).
While yet to figure in two starts this time in, the Charge Forward filly has reportedly taken well to work in the lead-up to the Thoroughbred Club Stakes and is a proven performer over both course and distance.
A standout filly over two-year-old events in her native Queensland over autumn and winter, Aimee was unable to beat a single runner home in the Group 2 Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m) last time out, but is offered a good chance of reversing her fortunes in the Thoroughbred Club Stakes from barrier 6.
Finishing third in the Powerade Handicap (1110m) first-up on February 3rd, Aimee secured four impressive victories back-to-back including the Group 3 Ken Russel Memorial Open (1200m) on May 3rd; beating a classy field.
Winning the Boston Salon Handicap (1200m) in her only other start prior to the Thousand Guineas Prelude, trainer Noel Doyle is confident jockey Steven Arnold will get the best from his sole entrant over her pet distance this weekend.
