Earthquake took out first place in the 2014 Thoroughbred Club Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield this afternoon.
In second place was Tawteen, followed by More Radiant.
Earthquake had a fantastic jump from the barriers, as did Tawteen and Ygritte. More Radiant had a relatively less steady start but was able to turn things up a bit to rapidly take some early ground.
Tawteen took up the pace, with Earthquake, Ygritte and Cristalina Lago sitting not far behind. Steven Arnold held Aimee in position at the rear of the field against the rails. Silversands was nearby, keeping pace at the rear.
Towards the heart of the race jockey Stephen Baster took Tawteen forward some more to extend their lead to a full length. Earthquake, Ygritte and Cristalina Lago stayed strong just off the lead, with More Radiant not far back in mid field.
Coming around the turn McEvoy was forced to whip Earthquake into gear when they hit a bit of a flat spot. Following the race, McEvoy said “she did a little bit actually (hit a flat spot on the turn)” however he went on to say that “she was terrific.
“The form from last time just looked good (heading into this race)”.
London Lolly was able to come into fourth place for the Hawkes training partnership.
Prior to the race this morning Earthquake was the clear favourite. More Radiant and Tawteen were on the second and third lines of betting respectively.
Following today’s victory, Earthquake has maintained her record for placing in each of her career starts.
Tawteen had a third place in the MVRC Champagne Stakes (1200m) a couple of weeks ago, and that event has always been a decent guide to the Thoroughbred Club Stakes.
Aimee took home the wooden spoon in her last start in the Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m).
Manikato Stakes acceptor Eloping initially nominated for the Thoroughbred Club Stakes but failed to accept for the final field, leaving no Super Vobis Bonus contenders in the event.
The Group 3 Thoroughbred Club Stakes was the second event on a bumper race card that includes a total of 10 black type races. The headline event is the Group 1 $1 million Caulfield Guineas (1600m) which will run at 5:30pm (AEDST).
The Caulfield track is today rated a Good 3 and the weather conditions are perfectly acceptable in Melbourne today.
