Trainer Robert Smerdon has revealed rising three-year-old Fontiton will likely be kept to sprint races during her campaign through the 2015 Spring Carnival, meaning events like the Group 3 Thoroughbred Club Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on October 10th are likely to figure.
Fontiton immediately stamped her claims as one to watch through the early stages of her racing career, but failed to handle the late pace despite jumping as clear favourite in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) most recently on February 28th, finishing fifth.
Having clearly needed to return to the paddock, Smerdon told AAP he has been thrilled with the form and class displayed by the daughter of Turffontein in her return to work and is confident she will produce even better form through a 2015 Spring Carnival to be geared towards the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) on October 31st.
“We know what she can do over the shorter trips,” Smerdon said.
“She probably won’t have a lot of racing through the spring and we’ll probably stay to the shorter trips, I would imagine.
“I think she’s a bit late coming in for the Thousand Guineas and we don’t know whether she runs a mile.”
Debuting for an impressive six length success in the $250,000 Inglis Banner (1000m) on October 25th, Fontition was immediately returned to the paddock, but picked up where she left off first-up on January 26th when comfortably taking out the Group 3 Blue Diamond Preview (1000m).
Continuing her perfect career start through the Group 2 Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m) on February 14th, the filly out of Personal Ensign did not jump well in the Blue Diamond Stakes, and while receiving something of a good run in transit, was unable to sustain much of a sprint upon arriving at the final straight.
Smerdon is yet to set a specific first point of call for Fontiton in spring, but will likely look to a minor event at her home Caulfield track partway through September.
